Some Days in the Life of a Tree
Virtual Upcycling Music
If you asked me from what sound material this CD emerged, I would describe it as a kind of Upcycling Music. Countless sounds I recorded over the past years and which have since accumulated and layered on the hard drives of my computer – rather like the rings of a tree – I call back to life. Mostly they came from radio plays and film scores I worked on, and also from sound art projects. There are voices of humans and animals, sounds and sequences of live-recorded instruments, and noises captured from our environment. All these sounds come together on this CD from unlikely virtual collages, and thereby gain new meaning. For me, it is as though I see through the sounds, hearing behind them the roaring and raging of the world and also, now and then, a quiet sound, a distant bird, the waving of a blade of grass in the wind – a breath.
